Commemoration
For the centenary of one of the greatest disasters since the foundation of the Irish state, we strongly believe that the best efforts of our community and our state need to be mobilised.
On the occasion of the actual 100 year anniversary, we will be working to ensure that the representatives of Irish society, at the highest level, are present in Dromcollogher. Ceremonials, befitting a national tragedy and worthy of the memory of the 48 people who died, are being planned.
The anniversary will occur on Saturday, September 5th, 2026. We have been extending invitations to church and state leaders and will continue to do so. Relatives and families of victims and survivors will also be welcomed.
In addition to the ceremonies that will take place on that day, we intend to mark the actual hour of the tragedy, at 10pm on that day, with a special night-time remembrance event.
As well as the centenary day commemorations, we are planning to host a series of related activities and events in the days leading up to the anniversary. Current ideas include:

Public Information event. Talks and presentations setting out details of The Burning. The aim is to ensure that the memory of the event and the people is preserved.

History Symposium. Invited speakers discuss the historical context, the recorded events, and the impact of the Dromcollogher Cinema Disaster.

The Bell Ringer. Some years ago, a play called The Bell Ringer was written and directed by a close relative of one of the victims. Loosely based on The Burning, the play provided a sensitive portrayal of events. It was also artistically outstanding.

Artistic Performances. Significant events, particularly one as poignant as The Burning, often inspire artists to create works. Some have already been moved to write and compose. Others will likely follow and it would be appropriate that the collected output of the written word, art, music, and song be showcased locally, at the time of the centenary.

Civic Reception. In a community noted for care and hospitality, our visiting dignitaries, the families and relatives, and the organisations taking part in our commemoration will be hosted at a civic reception in Dromcollogher.
