Memorial

The public Library in Church Street was built by subscription on the site of The Burning. It is a very fine and architecturally impressive building. Our group are proposing to add an Archive Room and Information Centre at the rear of the Library. As well as providing a fitting location for documents and artefacts associated with The Burning, it can relate the story of the disaster with modern multi-media presentation facilities.

The communal grave, holding the remains of 46 of the victims is marked by a tall elegant Celtic cross. The names of all of the 48 deceased are inscribed on its base. This will need some attention to ensure it stands out for another hundred years. Attention may also be given to the resting places of the other two victims in Cloncrew and Deliga, subject to consultation.

Or group sees the need to mark the one hundred year anniversary of The Burning in a special way. We intend to create a Grove of Remembrance, where each of the victims will be represented by the planting of a tree. Trees, standing tall along an avenue, will perpetuate the memory of the people that died. A monument to mark the centenary may also be placed on this avenue.
